Performance Notes | "PEACE, OR END OF CIVILISATION. SIR S. CRIPPS ON ATOM BOMB PERIL. Discussing the atomic bomb, Sir Stafford Cripps, President of the Board of Trade, said last night: "Unless we can, by experiment, establish the truth of the theory that the world can live together in peace - which seems to run counter to all historic experience - we must expect the inevitability of the destruction of our civilisation at no very distant date. ...It becomes our cardinal duty to make the boldest effort to eliminate the risk of war. That we can only do by adjusting the political, social and economic policies of our different countries to the circumstances of a new age." Sir Stafford read the following message from the King: "I am convinced that co-operation of the youth of all countries provides the surest guarantee for the peace for which we have all worked and fought so hard.""
