Performance NotesThe set list was changed from the original one published due to the terror attacks on September 11 2001 (9/11) in America. The programme stated, ''The second half of the advertised programme has been changed in the light of Tuesday's events in the USA. As Nicholas Kenyon, Director of the Proms, explained, 'We felt it was vital to respond to people's mood at this sombre and difficult hour, and at the same time to show that music can affirm our shared humanity. We will mark the tragedy in America with Barber's 'Adagio' and Tippett's arrangements of classic spirituals, and then show that there is no more universal expression of the power of music to draw people together than the great choral finale from Beethoven's 'Ninth Symphony'.'

American conductor Leonard Slatkin made not so much a Last Night of the Proms speech as a series of introductions, explaining each piece's consoling significance. The US flags was drapped and waved by Prommers around the Hall. The US National Anthem was sung minus the more overtly anti-British verses.

The final part of the event was broadcast across America on 300 national public radio stations.
