Performance Notes'Steady interruptions from what appeared to be the extreme left and extreme right political camps marked all five speeches at the mass meeting arranged by the National Council of Labour and held at the Albert Hall last night.
The discordant voices greeted Mr Gaitskill the chief and last speaker, before he began to speak. Earlier in the meeting, however, when the leader of the opposition arrived from the House of Commons he was met with a tremendous burst of applause and only a faint undertone of booing.'
(The Times, 7 November 1956)

Mr Gaitskill also paid tribute to the Hungarian people for their courageous and for freedom.

Two days later on 8 December 1956, over 1,000 students from London University Colleges gathered outside the Royal Albert Hall and marched to the Russian Embassy in Kensington Palace Gardens. The students carried Hungarian and Polish flags draped with black and slogans such as 'Stop Slaughtering Students.'
