This concert was the last concert for violinist Paul Beard, leader of the BBC Symphony Orchestra for twenty-six years and more than 700 Prom's concerts. Sir Malcolm Sargent paid tribute to him and the Prommers presented him with a silver hair brush and comb to huge applause.
