| Performance Notes | "FOLK SONG VENTURE BEGINS WELL.
In the uncharted, and charted, seas of "folk" there are both deeps and shallows, and it was shrewd of Folk Directions to initiate at the Albert Hall last night a new series of concerts under the comprehensive title "The New Songs."
The venture started well with a selection of folk-artists headed by Buffy Sainte-Marie who wrote "The Universal Soldier." She is an American Cree Indian singer and song writer of compelling power and integrity who, in person, is indefinitely greater than the sum of her records.
She sang about her own people as well as songs of immigrants and Mexian fisherman, and children's play songs accompanied by the mouth-bow. Some of her own incisive songs are of an almost hypnotic quality, and her guitar accompaniement is brilliant.
With her were "Spider" John Koerner, folk-blues singer and guitarist, Matt McGinn, Alasdair Clayre and Leon Rosseldon.
The songs of the last two were particularly impressive. Leon Rosselson's gentle yet penetrating lyrics included his brief but mordant "Spring in the City," a kind of Alphaville in miniature."
