Presentation of Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society to Benjamin Britten (Sir Thomas Armstrong)
Performance NotesThe Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society was presented to Benjamin Britten at this concert, which took place three days after the composer's fifty-first birthday. Sir Thomas Armstrong presented the medal as Chairman of the LPO's management committee. Struck in 1870, the gold medal of the RPS commemorated the centenary of Beethoven's birth. At the time, the only other living composers to hold the medal were Igor Stravinsky, Sir Arthur Bliss and Sir William Walton.
