Performance Notes | The event was attended by delegates and representatives from over forty countries. Scientific sessions as well as more general meetings took place. Meetings were not open to the public but they were to journalists so that there was an opportunity for questions to be asked and discussion could take place. Sets were designed by Franco Zeffirelli.
"EXPENSIVE FIBRES. The man-made fibres congress comes to a climax at the Albert Hall to-night with an entertainment directed by Franco Zeffirelli, conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent, and costing over £50,000. "Could we have that fanfare again?" cried Sir Malcolm at a dress rehearsal yesterday and chaos ensued as hundred of ballet dancers, clowns and acrobats shuffled to take up new positions. Yehudi Menuhin played a solo under a golden spotlight and accompanied by the Philahrmonia Orchestra, somebody fired a rifle in the background, and only a little sawdust was needed to give the full flavour of a circus. Everybody seemed liberated by the lack of financial boundaries, though to-morrow the thought may occur that this money would have supported two London seasons by a symphony orchestra."
