Performance Notes | Fashion Aid, an off-shoot of Band Aid (to raise money for victims of famine in Africa) was a spectacular star-studded event that ended in a fabulous runway wedding between singer Freddie Mercury and actress Jane Seymour.
The gala fashion show event featured some of the worlds best-known fashion designers including Armani and Yves Saint Laurent, with designs presented by top models including Grace Jones, Jerry Hall and Boy George. The event was attended by many famous people including the then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Ringo Starr and Angelica Houston.
Dress Code - Dress fashionably
Jerry Hall stepped out of a foil-wrapped box in a red and gold lame strapless dress and Freddie Mercury 'married' model Jane Seymour who wore a wedding dress and veil by designer Emanuel.
Bob Geldof, alongside designers Georgio Armani and Issey Miyake were seated in the Royal Box. Other guests at the event included Charles Spencer (9th Earl Spencer), George Michael (singer), Michael Brandon (actor), Glynis Bauber (actress), Ringo Star (musician), Alison Moyet (singer), Anita Dobson (actress), Glenys Kinnock (politician) and David Bowie (singer-songwriter, musician, actor).
Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney, who were unable to attend, recorded a message of support which is played over the Halls PA system, and includes the McCartneys singing a short improvised ditty, aptly called Fashion Aid.
"At the Royal Albert Hall, Ringo, Barbara and Olivia Harrison, are in attendance at the Fashion Aid evening, an event to aid the African famine relief fund and the Band Aid Trust. The former members of 10cc and now respected film maker Kevin Godley and Lol Creme capture the evening's events on film. Paul and Linda, who could not make the event, send a supportive audiotape message which is played over the Hall's PA system, and includes the McCartney's singing a short improvised ditty, aptly called 'Fashion Aid'." ('The Beatles Diary: After the Break-Up, 1970-2001', Keith Badman)
A press launch for the event was held in Soho, London on 23 October 1985 to which many of the evening's stars attended including model Jerry Hall, and fashion designers the Emanuels. Jasper Conran, the event organiser gave press interviews and stated he aimed to raise £1,000,000 on the night. The press launch was recorded and broadcast by the BBC. (BBC Archive)
Mrs Alan Henderson was in attendance. |
