"RAY CHARLES.
...On surely the most extravagant stage ever seen at the Albert Hall like a great white segment of cake slicing out into the erna with the musicians as the filling ad two preposterous racing cars raised high on each flank - the trappings of sponsorship - this 50 year-old benevolent godfather of the blues overcame some inexcusable lapses by the sound technicians to give rich meaning to a phrase from one of his strongest songs, "gentle is the darkness."
