Performance NotesIn 1986 there were twelve preliminary judges who each gave the contestants a score of 2, 3 or 4. This meant that the contestants could receive a minimum score of 24 and a maximum of 48. 1986 rules required that at least one contestant from each continent advanced to the top 15 semi-final round. This is why Miss Philippines, as the best contestant from Asia (score of 32) and Miss Swaziland, as the best from Africa (score of 26) went through, while both Miss Gibraltar and Miss Sweden (with a score of 33) did not.

The event was recorded and broadcast by Thames Television in 31 countries.
