Grace, charm, personality at The Royal Albert Hall , London (organised by Mecca Promotions). Michael Aspel and Pete Murray introduce 60 beautiful girls who have flown in from all over the world to compete for the greatest of all beauty titles. 28 million viewers will back their choice against those of a panel of famous judges chaired by Peter Dimmock.
Colour film footage of this event is available from British Pathe (Film ID 2235.06, Film ID 2235.04) running time 1min 13secs, 1min 4secs.
Debut of a contestant from the Seychelles. Contestants were withdrawn from Ceylon, Ghana, Italy, Kenya, Morocco, Peru, Thailand and Uganda. The contest was won by Eva Rueber-Staier (Austria), Gail Renshaw (USA) was second and Christa Margraf (Germany) third.
"Outside the Albert Hall a group of straggle-haired feminists stamped about, noses pink with cold protesting about this exploitation of womanhood. They wore flesh pink banners stencilled with Miss-Fortune, Mis-Laid(?) and other slogans. "Equal pay, equal rights, equal jobs pow" they chanted but then when has beauty ever been equal? It was a dark night but could their protests have been jealousy? The demonstrators were from the Women's Liberation Workshop, a name which is something of a contradiction in terms." (The Times, 28 November 1969)
Original photographs of the event are held by Mirrorpix. Associated Press Archive hold B&W British Movietone footage of the event (BM95421).
The event was broadcast on BBC television at 21:00 on 27 November 1969.
The 1968 Miss World had been contracted to be held at the Hall, however it was found that because of difficulties lighting the auditorium it would be impossible for the BBC to televise it, and so it syated at the Lyceum Ballroom, then owned by promoter Mecca. |
