'... The London Univeristy had sttof for certain things, of which other universities in this country had not recognised the immense importance. That University had stood for absolute religious equality at a time when the older universities did not consider it a proper university idea. The equality in regard to religion, he thought, they had also carried out in all branches of their University work. Again, they were the first, by many years to recognise the rights of women to the University degree and to higher education (Cheers).
Not only had they held out the hand of absolute equality to people of both sexes but they had endeavoured to hold out the hand of equality to different branches of study...' (The Times 5 May 1922)
