Performance Notes | "GO TO ISRAEL, MRS MEIR TELLS LONDON JEWS. Mrs Golda Meir, former Israeli Prime Minister, appealed to thousands of Jews at an Albert Hall rally last night to "Get up and come to Israel." The real answer to Israel's problems was mass immigration. She wanted them to go to Israel, not to fight Arabs, but to meet the challenge of desert, rocks and marshes. The Jews, said Mrs Meir, were the people who gave to the world a moral code that could not be improved on - the Ten Commandments." (The Daily Telegraph, 16 January 1976)
Israeli defence minister General Moshe Dayan was in attendance.
Anti-Zionist protestors picketed the meeting outside the building holding placards, one banner, and one Palestinian flag. Several of the protestors wore white Shemagh Keffiyeh, a symbol at demonstrations for Palestinian liberation. Text on the placards includes Palestine (repeated across the placard) and Zionism = expropriation of Arab land = exclusive Jewish settlement = Judaisation = racism. Some of the placards show a Palestinian person being pulled by the hair by a member of Israeli armed forces, titled Zionist oppression on one of the placards a Palestinian being pulled by the hair by a member of Israeli armed forces, titled Zionist oppression on one of the placards.
Images of the protest can be found in Bishopsgate Insitute Archive [Ref. MS/6/2/19/1 and 3]. |
