Performance Notes | Scratch Concerts returned to the Hall for a massed performance of 'The Armed Man' by Karl Jenkins. Sir Karl Jenkins' 20th century choral classic 'The Armed Man' was teamed with orchestral favourites reflecting the twin themes of war and peace: Tchaikovskys '1812 Overture' and 'Mars' and 'Jupiter' from Holst's suite 'The Planets'.
More than 2,000 voices from The Really Big Chorus performed, comprising choirs and individual singers from all over the UK and abroad. Angharad Lyddon was the mezzo-soprano soloist, and Manvinder Rattan (Sing for Pleasure, The Choir, JLP Music Society) sung the evocative Adhan, accompanied by the English Festival Orchestra, at full strength under the baton of TRBC's Principal Conductor Brian Kay. Sir Karl Jenkins was present at this performance.
'The Armed Man' fuses words and music from many different centuries and cultures in condemnation of war and the misery it brings. The words of the Latin Mass are juxtaposed with the Adhan (the Muslim call to prayer), the Mahabharata (an ancient Indian epic), and poetry from across the world.
Trumpet player played a short piece from the top of G stalls.
Charity collection for the National Autistic Society was made during th einterval and post-show. |
