Orchestra or Band | Brighton College Jazz Quartet (Ben Alexander - cello, Toto Gill - piano, Matthew Veck - double bass, guitar, Alex Sansbury - drums) |
Performance Notes | These concerts were run in partnership with Music for Youth as part of the Royal Albert Halls commitment to supporting the next generation of talented young musicians and giving them a platform to shine.
The quartet was formed at Brighton College in 2014 where the boys are all music scholars and friends. They have achieved outstanding success individually as musicians but seem to have something special when they play together, sharing a passion for Jazz. They have accomplished a great deal in this first year; performing in the Winners' Concert of the Pro Corda National Chamber music festival and more recently competing successfully in the wonderful 'Music for Youth' Festival.
The Bolling suite for cello and jazz piano trio was the first piece they performed as a group and forms part of their recital programme. It is a wonderful fusion of Classical and jazz styles written by the French composer Claude Bolling for the cellist Yo Yo Ma. They will perform two movements from this Suite, 'Baroque in Rhythm' and the more wistful 'Ballade' which leads on to the more traditional jazz style that makes up the rest of their set including Waltz for Debby, Take Five, So What, The nearness of you, and some original compositions. |
