Performance Notes'Mr Ramsay MacDonald MP, said that peace associations had failed to break down the national feelings in the minds of the great masses of the peoples of the world, which kept them apart and often led to war. But the Socialist movement had done it. (Cheers). Everyone was in favour of peace. Even those who by their actions were inflaming international hatreds and thus tending to war declared that peace was their sole aim. But what were the statesmen doing? They regulated foreign affairs on the principle that humanity the world over was a mass of cheats, common liars, and common robbers. In their struggle to grab the markets of the world the nations were regarding each other with suspicion, envy and hatred.'
The resolution passed stated that:-
'This meeting declares that there is not and cannot be any cause for war between the democracies of Europe. It protests emphatically against the continuous increase in armaments and the attempts which are made to foster strife among the nations. The international working class movement repudiates militarism in all its forms as being inimical to the progress of the race. Finally this assembly calls upon the workers of all lands to unite under the Socialist flag and thus establish industrial peace and international good will.' (The Times, 12 December 1910)
