"During last week an exhibition of the arts and industries carried on in the greatest of our Oriental dependencies was held in the East Room [Coda Restaurant] of the Albert Room, under the auspices of the Society for the Encouragement and Preservation of Indian Art. On Friday the exposition was opened by Lady Grant Duff, who in the course of a brief address explaine dthe objects of the association. SPeaking of the inception of the exhibition, she paid tribute to the energy displayed by Mrs Carmichael, the chief mover in the work of the society, who had done a great deal to improve the textile fabrics of India. Among many of the beautiful products of the native craftsmen were to be seen curious examples of perversion of taste, and in her opinion the real explanation of this degeneration lay in that infirmaity of human nature by which all instincts, however noble, were untrustworthy until they were chastened and directed by knowledge and duty. To supply those factors was the aim of the association."
