Performance Notes"It allowed us to see and hear Mr Bernstein as composer and conductor at once, to appreciate the superb attack and style of the New York brass and percussion departments, and also to imbibe numerous modern techniques of composition and instrumentation applied to motives, themes, phrases and melodies which had already lodged in most people's memories some time before Mr Bernstein started to explain what these terms meant. If all lecture-concerts were as lucidly and naturally presented we should hear less about music being a 'minority' or 'intellectual' exercise" (The Times, 15 February 1964)
