Performance Notes | Film directors have reached for these works by Strauss and Holst in their attempts to explain the human condition against the infinite background of space. The depiction of astrological characters in The Planets, from the cheeky gameplay of Mercury to the shattering impact of Mars, could be made for the resonance of the Royal Albert Hall. The power of Strausss Also sprach Zarathustra is no less cinematic.
BBC co-commission and London premiere of 'Gravitational Waves', Iris ter Schiporst. The piece, "...was inspired by the throb detected in September 2015 of two black holes colliding more than a billion years ago. She translated this into a ten-minute piece that was as much theatre - the players putting on masks, nodding, swaying and shouting with choreographic precision - as muscularly minimalist music. Both somic and comic, it ws a dazzling showpiece for virtuoso youth." (The Times, 8 August 2016)
