Performance Notes | The Really Big Chorus returns to the Royal Albert Hall with Gloria! a joyful choral extravaganza with works by Antonio Vivaldi, John Rutter and Karl Jenkins.
Three very different composers respond to the jubilant text of the Gloria from the Latin Mass. Vivaldis sparkling setting dates from the 18th century and is a much-loved classic of the choral repertoire. John Rutter CBE whose magical Christmas carols are sung wherever there are choirs composed his Gloria in 1974; it is heard this evening in its full orchestration, with a foot-tapping last movement full of delicious syncopations and jazz rhythms.
We end with the version by Sir Karl Jenkins, commissioned by The Really Big Chorus in 2010, and now performed regularly the world over. A vibrant work on a large scale, it brings the concert to an exuberant close.
