| Performance Notes | Sir John Eliot Gardiner, the Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists mark the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Bachs austere and beautiful Lutheran cantatas stand in contrast to the lively rhythms and rich textures of Schützs music.
In 2000 Sir John Eliot Gardiner, the Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists performed all of Bachs surviving church cantatas in an unprecedented year-long musical pilgrimage. They return to these astonishing musical statements of faith, continuing our series of concerts marking the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation.
Hear two of Bachs Lutheran cantatas including Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, itself composed for a Reformation-anniversary celebration alongside psalm-settings by his German musical forebear Heinrich Schütz, alive with dance rhythms and vivid instrumental textures.
