| Performance Notes | Sakari Oramo and the BBC Symphony Orchestra weave together many of this seasons musical strands into the exuberant celebration that is the Last Night of the Proms.
They mark the 50th anniversaries of the deaths of composers Zoltán Kodály and Malcolm Sargent (better known as the longtime chief conductor of the Proms), and celebrate John Adamss 70th birthday with the London premiere of his exhilarating Lola Montez Does the Spider Dance.
Music by Sibelius marks the 100th anniversary of Finnish Independence, and Nina Stemme, arguably the worlds greatest living Wagnerian soprano, leads the end-of-season festivities.
The first half of the concert was broadcast live on BBC Two, and the second half live on BBC One.

From 17:15 the BBC Proms presented the Proms inthe Park celebration of the Last Night of the Proms in Hyde Park, hosted by Michael Ball. The open-air concert features a host of musical stars, including Proms in the Park favourites the BBC Concert Orchestra under the baton of Richard Balcombe, plus performance from pop legends Steps, the fabulous Gilbert OSullivan, Welsh baritone Sir Bryn Terfel, Elaine Paige, Texas, Five Guys Named Me, and the BBC Concert Orchestra. Proms in the Park was broadcast live on BBC Radio 2. |
