Holsts much-loved The Planets (premiered in 1918) and Vaughan Williamss choral masterpiece Toward the Unknown Region contrast with a new work by Anna Meredith and 59 Productions.
World premiere of 'Five Telegrams', Anna Meredith, draws on communications sent by young soldiers in 1918 and features specially produced digital projections by 59 Productions, creating a unique spectacle. The projections lit up the organ, choir stalls, back wall, and gallery colonnading. The NYCGB wore grey t-shirts so that they too became part of the projections. Musician for this work were placed in the end boxes of the second tier and in the gallery balcony. Anna Meredith came on stage for a bow at the end of the work.
This was the first time that such projection technology had been used inside the Royal Albert Hall.
World premiere and BBC co-commission with 14-18 NOW and Edinburgh International Festival of 'Five Telegrams', A Meredith.
Broadcast on BBC Two.
Guests in the audience included Lord Tony Hall (BBC Director-General) and Julia Hartley-Brewer (broadcaster and commentator).
The concert began with a 'Flourish with Fireworks', as a tribute to the composer Oliver Knussen who died on 8 July 2018. |
