Performance NotesThe annual National Brass Band Championships return to the Royal Albert Hall, with the nation’s top brass bands battling for the Challenge Trophy.

Commissioned by Brass Band Treize Etoiles for their performance at the 2013 Swiss National, the test piece at this event was the previous year’s top section test at the 37th Dutch Nationals. The test piece's title is a reference to Percy Grainger’s popular 'Handel in the Strand', and is a virtuoso set of symphonic variations based upon one of Handel’s best-known keyboard dances: the 'Sarabande' from his Suite in D Minor, HWV 437. Kenneth Downie draws heavily on its La Folia motif and original bass line to create his own variations and spectacular finale.

The winners were Fodens conducted by Russell Gray.

The event was filmed by TwoFour Productions and released by Sky Arts as part of a four part documentary series about some of Britain’s best championship level bands as they compete in the season’s most prestigious contests. The event was audio recorded by World of Sound for CD release.
