Performance Notes | Jessie J returns to the Royal Albert Hall on Tuesday 13 November 2018, as part of our Albert Sessions. Ahead of her show, Jessie J will spend time with 30 young people from the BRIT school, where Jessie herself is a proud allumni. The session will include an intimate performance of some her songs and an insightful Q&A, offering participates the chance to learn from one of the biggest names in British pop. By invitation only.
Jessie J typed on a laptop which was connected toa big screen for the students to see her responses to questions. She did this to rest her voice, having performed 35 shows almost in a row, and a further 19 to go after the Hall show. As she couldnt sing, Jessie J then invited some students to perform a selection of songs for her and gave them feedback. The Top Ten advice she gave to the students was: 1. If you want this life, take care of yourself and your voice. No dairy (it sticks to the vocal chords), no alcohol or acidic foods (not good for your singing muscles), lots of tea, ginger, lemon, honey. 2. After a concert, a writing or a recording session, close yourself back up before you go back into the real world you have to protect your peace and your secrets. 3. Having nerves is good because it means that you care. Dont push them away, accept them. They help you hold yourself to high standards, because the audience doesnt care if youve had 2 hours of sleep or if youve played 30 shows in a row before. 4. Life is about learning yourself the more you know yourself, the more you will know who is and isnt for you. Remember that people that lead with fear dont lead with art. Work with people you love. And dont look to anyone else to believe in you: believe in yourself. The biggest piece of advice I can give it dont just trust your instincts act on them! Jessie J 5. Its not always fun and easy to maintain creative control, so youll have to be strong. Always know what you want. Be free but always know your own limitations. 6. The key to navigate the music industry is to remind yourself that it would not exist without the art artists have the power. 7. Your insecurities can be your power: vulnerability is not weakness, its being real. To overcome your insecurities, write about them. Also, its a waste of time not loving yourself youre you. Be true and dont overthink. Live first, and live an exciting life so you can write what you feel. You will always re-open your own wounds to help others heal theirs. Jessie J 8. Find out who you are behind the lights and cameras as well. 9. Dont try to record ideas you dont remember if you dont remember it, it wasnt good enough. 10. Sing EVERYWHERE you can: open mic nights, weddings, trains, underground, the streets. All it takes is one person to change it all: you. |
