Performance NotesFamiliar to millions from several TV commercials, the powerful opening chorus of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana sets the scene for a work depicting life in all its glory and misery. O Fortuna is a hymn to the fickle goddess Fortune; this and the texts which follow may be medieval, but their sentiments – love, rejection, corruption, beauty – are decidedly modern. This, coupled with the instant appeal of Orff’s music, ensures that Carmina Burana maintains its place as one of the world’s most popular choral pieces.

Complementing 1,000-plus voices of The Really Big Chorus, will be the English Festival Orchestra which will also perform Walton’s Spitfire Prelude & Fugue, Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks and Elgar’s Pomp & Circumstance March no. 1.

Brian Kay will be directing.
