A flight of 16 swans was the catalyst for Sibeliuss stirring Fifth Symphony, with its ambiguous, mysterious ending, while for Judith Weir it was natures process forests sprouting outwards from a single seed, endlessly growing and multiplying that offered inspiration.
Nature turns menacing in Mussorgskys vivid tone-poem A Night on the Bare Mountain. Boundarybreaking singer Nora Fischer is the soloist in the UK premiere / BBC & Los Angeles Philharmonic co-commission of The Only One by Dutch composer Louis Andriessen, who turned 80 this year. |
