Performance Notes | 'The performance of a very abridged version of Handel's Messiah by the Royal Choral Society on New Year's Day attracted an enormous audience to the Albert-Hall. Apart from the unsatisfactory effect produced by the emission of no fewer than 16 numbers from the work, the standard of excellence attained by the performance was a very high one. This was especially the case with regard to the choral numbers, the singing if which was as fine as the most fervent admirer of Handel could desire. The applause with which 'For Unto Us', was received was so persistent that Mr Barnby was forced to repeat the chorus. Of the soloists Mr Lloyd carried off the honours. In spite of the fog which filled the hall, his singing of the tenor music was unsurpassable.' (The Times, 3 January 1890) |
