Performance NotesThe 1895 General Election was a disastrous defeat for the Liberal Party with the number of seats they held in the House of Commons falling from 272 to 177. No defeat during the election was more shocking than that of Sir William Harcourt, leader of the Liberals in the House of Commons and Chancellor of the Exchequer. Harcourt's defeat was overwhelmingly blamed by contemporaries, and subsequently by historians, on his support for temperance legislation. This was specifically a piece of legislation called the Local Option which would have allowed for local prohibition'.

The Times (27 May 1895) reported that upwards of 90,000 people had applied for tickets and that just over 10,000 were admitted into the Hall. An overflow meeting was held in Hyde Park. Large contingents of various London-based temperance organisations assembled at different points in the Capital and marched in a procession to the Hall which began at 17:00 and ended at 22:00.
