Performance Notes | "For the first time for nearly a hundred years the 'Messiah' has been performed in this country in a manner more or less approxiamating to Handel's own method, and to the instrumental accompaniments with which it was originally given under his personal direction. The suggestion of the experiment made at the Royal Albert Hall last night came from Sir George Grive, while the credit for its execution is due in chief measure to Sir Frederick Bridge, conductor of the Royal Choral Soceity and organist of Westminster Abbey, who has received valuable assiatnce from a well-known Handelian enthusiast, Mr T W Bourne (of Oxford University), the writer of the excellent organ part specially prepared for this occassion" (The Manchester Guardian, 3 January 1899) |
