Performance Notes"On Tuesday last over 6000 people assembled in the Albert Hall to listen to an American exponent of the strange wisdom of 'Christian Science.' For years and years hundreds of thousands of people have listened to and accepted a doctrine that has as a matter of fact no foundation whatever either in science or in Christianity and is accordingly termed Christian Science. Such a phenomenon cries for an explanation. The power of the absurd is great in the land and St Augustine was right in exclaiming 'I believe it because it is absurd.' 'Credo quia absurdum.' Yet, with all that, the earnest student of contemporary thought is obliged to attempt an explanation of the success of a credo as absurd as is that of Christian Science. For absurd it is. Put in its briefest form, Christian Science is the opposite extreme of materialism."
