Performance Notes"POPE'S LEGATE IN LONDON.
GREAT MEETING AT THE ALBERT HALL.
ENTHUSIASTIC SCENES.
LOYALTY TO THE POPE.
...The austere severity of the magnificent cathedral gives way to the brilliance of the Albert Hall...The noble hall, with its graceful curves, was resplendent with light and colour. It sought extraneous ornamentation. The white and gold in the scheme of decorations, the crimson curtains which draped the boxes, these seemed to proclaim their sympathy with the gathering for were they not the colours of Pope and Cardinals? The great organ was draped with the English and Pontifical flags, a few graceful ferns spread their branches on either side of the organ stool...
Long before seven o'clock visitors began to flock to the hall. The upper tiers were the first to fill, but in rapid succession balconies, stalls, amphitheatre, and boxes claimed their occupants. All were dressed in the sombre garb deemed fitting for the occassion, most of the ladies using the black lace mantilla as a head covering....
...The pent up feelinsg of the tense gathering have at last found expression; it is as if the repression of th elast 300 years has suddenly come to an end, and in perfect union, all are uttering a paean of joy at this visible sign of religious freedom."
