Performance Notes | Also referred to as the Noah's Ark Fete and the Noah's Art Great Fair and Variety Show.
Queen Alexandra visited the fete in the course of the afternoon and honoured the artist Mr Louis Wain by a command to draw some sketches of cats for her in the royal box, and both she and the Empress Marie purchased drawings of the artist.
'...There is some uncertainty as to the period which is now represented, for the scheme of decoration there are suggestions of Scheherazade and the mysteries of the Arabian Nights Entertainments, and also of the Great Flood, for Noah's Ark towers above all else. The strange animals with grinning faces and glistening eyes which guard the stalls are, however, of a prehistoric kind which one is not inclined to associate with the sojourn in the Ark. The atmosphere of the Arabian Nights has been especially cleverly suggested, and with varying shades of blue Mrs Hwfa Williams has evolved a delightful effect. The centre of the hall is occupied by two of the most striking exhibits, Messrs. Marshall and Snelgrove's display of the very latest fashions and Messrs. Carter's Japanese garden. The remaining stalls, about forty in number, cater for every taste, from cigarettes to American candy, from knick-knacks to autographed books, and from flowers to tea and coffee. In one way only could the visitor escape a constant fusillade of requests to buy, and that was the purchase of an "Indemnity Badge", which was by no means a bad investment at a sovereign.'
