Performance Notes | "The Albert Hall was packed to its fullest capacity yesterday afternoon for the concert which had been announced as Dame Nellie Melba's 'au revoir' before starting on a tour of the world. The King and Queen and Princess Mary were present. So eager was the public desire to hear Melba that crowds of well-dressed people assembled outside the Albert Hall three hours before the time for the concert to begin. The queue gradually grew, until it extended several deep round the vast building, and those unable to join the circle surged into the roadway, where special police were required to regulate the traffic. Members of the Australian community in London, together with several of the Australian cricketers, assembled at the artists' entrance, where they formed an impromptu 'guard of honour'. A characteristic "cooee" welcome was given on the arrival of the prima donna, and Melba entered under a shower of mimosa, a delicate compliment to the land of her birth." (The Times, 9 May 1921) |
