Performance Notes | "JACK HYLTON'S BAND. Truly we are living in days of quick social transitions. To perform dance music at the Royal Albert Hall on a Sunday afternoon would, not so very long ago, have been deemed an irreverent proposition. Yet when Mr Jack Hylton and his Band appeared there yesterday there was a large crowd and, to judge by appearances, it is unlikely that 1 per cent, had drifted in hoping to hear "Messiah" or a programme of carols. You know the jazz audiences by their faces, by their general youthfulness, by a suggesstion of smartness in their clothes and in their demeanour, by their eagerness to have more and still more of this mild nervous excitement. Let it be said at once that the word "jazz" did not appear in the announcements not in the programme; "symphonic syncopation" was the official phrase." (The Daily Telegraph, December 1926) |
