Performance Notes | "The spirit of comradeship dominated the proceedings. The old marching songs were sung with a zest of which only those who had sung them in far different and less inspiring circumstances are capable, and as the great volume of melody filled the huge building there must have been present in the minds of many of the singers scenes which to them are for ever associated with this or that particular song. The singing was led by the massed bands of the Brigade of Guards, conducted by Captain Andrew Harris, and the organ played by Mr F W Holloway. The undying choruses of the war, such as 'Theres a Long Long Trail a-Winding', 'Tipperary' and 'Keep the Home Fires Burning', and 'Take Me Back to Dear Old Blighty' were sung with tremendous spirit." The event was broadcast on the National programme on BBC radio. |
