Performance Notes | 'About 8,000 members of the Left Book Club were present at the Albert Hall yesterday to celebrate the second anniversary of the club. It now has a membership of 50,000. Mr Victor Gallancz, who presided said that during last year, they had issued about 750,000 books to members, and 12,000 members were meeting every fortnight to discuss the books and their problems. The Dean of Canterbury had undertaken the editorship of a Christian and religious section of the club. Lord Addison, Sir Charles Trevelyan, Mr R Acland MP, Mr J Strachey and Mr H Pollitt also spoke, and Mr Paul Robeson sang.' (The Times, 17 January 1938) |
