Performance Notes | One week prior to the release of the album, 'ACCELERATE', R.E.M. performed debut show at the Hall to celebrate 60 years of the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art), London. All profits went to the ICA, a non-profit arts institute and registered charity.
Commenting on the event, Ekow Eshun, ICA artistic director, said: We are delighted that REM is generously supporting our 60th anniversary with a series of standout events culminating in a collaborative gig at the Royal Albert Hall. The ICA has consistently been at the forefront of cultural exploration, working with leading and emergent talent to present a fresh understanding of art and culture, and provide a forum for exploration. REM are true trailblazers who have pushed the boundaries of their form and it is with great pleasure that we are working with them to help the ICA to continue to foster new voices address wider artistic concerns.
Alongside this concert an exhibition of R.E.M. photographs curated by by The New Yorkers Steve Pyke was held at the ICA from 22-24 March 2008.
Before the concert on 24 March the ICA also held a pre-release playback of the new R.E.M album 'Accelerate'; an exclusive screening of Vincent Moons R.E.M. film Six Days with a Q&A with Vincent and Michael Stipe plus Vincents five R.E.M. Take Away Shows; and also REM on film: Two hours of classic, rare and unseen REM footage.
The event was broadcast on BBC Radio 2. |
