Performance NotesThe Proms welcomes the newly formed Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra as part of a European and US tour this summer. Brought together by the Metropolitan Opera, New York, and the Polish National Opera, the brand new orchestra led by Canadian-Ukrainian conductor, Keri-Lynn Wilson, includes recently refugeed Ukrainian musicians, Ukrainian members of European orchestras and some of the top musicians of Kviv, Liviv, Kharkiv, Odesa, and elsewhere in Ukraine. The Ukraine Ministry of Culture is granting a special exemption to military-age, male members of orchestras inside the country, enabling them to participate in a remarkable demonstration of the power of art over adversity. Following the inaugural concert in Warsaw, the orchestra’s first stop will be in London at the Proms ahead of concerts in European destinations including Amsterdam, Berlin, Edinburgh, Hamburg and Munich before culminating with concerts in New York and Washington.

The auditorium was turned yellow and blue, the colours of the Ukranian flag, by Prommers wearing yellow and blue clothing and hanging the Ukranian flag from the box fronts. The whole audience stood in solidarity with Ukraine during the performance of the country's National Anthem.

After the Prom, an event called 'Join Hands for Ukraine', took place outside the Hall on the south steps organised by the groups Thank EU for the Music, SECD, and UK's Star of European Unity. Around 300 people attended with some holding up the Quilt for Ukraine, holding a two minute's silence, and listening to a Ukraninan chant, and speeches paying tribute to the people of Ukraine, mentioning those who have lost their lives, and those defending their country and culture from Russian invasion. The enormous quilt was formed from pieces made by people from around the world crafting in solidarity. The human rights lawyer Maragret Owen OBE, founder of the NGO Widows For Peace Through Democracy spoke at the event. A collection was held for the relief of Ukraninan refugees.
