Performance NotesThis was the first Festival of Remembrance at which the British Legion could use the prefix 'Royal' following the Royal Charter bestowed to the organisation on 29 May 1971.

The event was broadcast from 21:50-22:35 on BBC One and was also broadcast on BBC Radio 2 from 20:30-21:00.

Special security measures were put in place for the event following an earlier anonymous telephone caller to Scotland Yard claiming to represent the IRA and other extremist group threatened to disrupt the festival.
