The D-Day operation during World War II was the largest amphibious invasion in world history and was executed by land, sea and air.
Launched on 6 June 1944, the simultaneous landing of allied forces took place on five separate beaches - Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword - in Normandy, France. It marked the beginning of the end of World War II.
The event was screened live to over 200 cinemas across the UK as well as BBC television. It was also broadcast live on BBC Radio 2 and British Military Radio.
Katherine Jenkins sang a 'duet' with Dame Vera Lynn which consisted of Katherine Jenkins singing live accompanied by 1940s video footage with sound of Dame Vera which was projected onto two screens hung on either side of and above the stage.
Dame Vera Lynn watched the concert from home and her granddaugter Virginia was seated in the Royal Box, alongside Sir Winston Churchill's great grandson Randolph Churchill.
Jim Radford,a D-Day veteran sung his own composition in remembrance of his crew mates who died on D-Day accompanied by the orchestra.
HRH The Duke of Cambridge, along with D-Day veterans appeared by pre-recorded video reciting from William Shakespeare's 'Henry V'.
A three-piece band performed on the South Steps in advance of the show. |
