In front of the conductor's rostrum stood the bust of Sir Henry Wood, which was surrounded by 76 white carnations, each one representing a year of his life. They were his favourite flowers and he always wore one. They were given by Lady (Jessie) Wood. (The Daily Telegraph, 5 March 1945)

The concert was broadcast on the BBC Home Service radio.
