Interval Speech (Admiral Evans) |
Performance Notes | "A film epic of the South Pole,' recording Scott's last Antarctic expedition, after being specially shown at the Albert Hall in the presence of the Duke of York, was presented to him on behalf of the nation; for which it was acquired by the British Empire Film Institute. Rear-Admiral E R Evans pointed out that the occasion inaugurated the Empire Film Library, and was rendered possible owing: to the generosity of various people, including Hr. Herbert G. Ponting (photographer with Scott's expedition), the owner of the film, who had handed it over before the full purchase price had been subscribed. A large sum. was still required. An effort was being made to secure the story of the film with sound accompaniment, which Mr. Ponting would give. The Prince of Wales in a letter congratulated the library on the acquisition of the film." (Perth Daily News, 27 February 1929)
Amongst those who attended the screening were the trustees of the British Empire Film Institute including Lord Askwith (Chairman), Rear-Admiral E RG R Evans (Scott's second-in-command), Mr Alfred C Bossom (architect and MP), the Belgian Ambassador, the Swedish Minister, the Eygptian minister, Herr H H Dieckhoff (Counsellor of the German Embassy), the Duchess of Somerset, and the Marquess of Londonderry.
During the interval a message from the Prince of Wales, who was unable to attend, was read by Admiral Evans. |
