"In front of Lord Clarendon was a pedestal supporting the first lamp to be lighted (in 1922), which is kept perpetually burning in the Church of All Hallows. From this Lord Charendon, in a darkened and silent hall, lighted the 67 lamps of groups which have now attained branch status. Each man carrying a lamp was accompanied by a banner bearer with a banner representing the new branch. Then followed the relighting of lamps belonging to existing branches.
The 'ceremony of light' followed. The word 'Light' was pronounced, and slowly some 250 flickering lamps were raised aloft, accentuating the darkness of the hall. The dimly outlined banners formed an effective background. The ceremony ended with the recitation by Mr Clayton of Laurence Binyon's 'They shall grow not old'.
