Performance Notes | "VAST AUDIENCE ENTHRALLED. YEHUDI MENUHIN AT ALBERT HALL. PERFECT PLAYING BY BOY VIOLINIST. The Albert Hall was packed from floor to ceiling yesterday afternoon when Yehudi Menuhin, the boy prodigy of our generation, delighted the audience with a number of impeccable performances received with uncommon warmth. But the power this young violinist exercises over his hearers was shown in an even more significant way. A London audience is not as demonstrative as, say, a Parisian audience; but it is probably more earnest and more attentive. Yesterday, when Yehudi Menuhin attackked the first notes of the Mozart concerto, the silence seemed absolute. When he was half-way through the first movement , however the stillness of that immense house had grown yet deeper. It was the kind of tribute an audience usually reserves for a great orator at the climax of a deeply stirring message. In that still air the softest note must have reached the farthest listener without any loss of power or quality." (The Daily Telegraph, 29 October 1934) |
