Jonas Kaufmann became the first German to sing 'Rule, Britannia!' but also the first artist at the Proms to have knickers hurled at him by adoring female fans in the audiences.

The event was screened live to the BBC Proms in the Park, held in Hyde Park and broadcast live on BBC Radio 2. The event was hosted by Sir Terry Wogan, conducted by Richard Balcombe with the Royal Choral Society, BBC Concert Orchestra, The Jacksons, Alison Balsom, Caro Emerald, Danielle de Niese, and Russell Watson.

A small protest was held from 18:00 by pro-BBC group 38 Degrees.
