'Two parties of militant suffragettes [WSPU] caused the only interuption by unfurling green sheets, inscribed with texts. The sheets were speedily removed...
...Mr Asquith had said only three words, and the attention of all in the hall was rivted upon him, when a cry of 'Shame!' rose from the back of the hall. The cause f the exclamation was at once evident. From two of the large private boxes on the principal tier large sheets about 30ft. or 40ft. square had been dropped down and so hung as to show the following inscription: - ''Votes for Women. To loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free...after an interruption lasting fully five minutes the sheets were torn down, after a struggle with the woman in evening dress who displayed them.' (The Times, 30 March 1911)
Ambassador Reid, read a message from President Taft. (Montreal Gazette, 29 March 1911)
Attendees on the platform included Lord Kinnaird, Sir Richard Solomon, High Commissioner for South Africa, the Rev. Lord William Cecil, Sir T Fowell Buxton, Canon Girdlestone, Sir Albert Spicer and Dr R F Horton. |
