Performance NotesCostume ball and procession based upon the court of Louis XIV in 1860.

"Wisely no attempt had been made to reproduce any particular part of Versailles in the Albert Hall - a building which has no ingenuity could ever make like anything at Versailles (no matter) what Saint-Simon may have to say about the 'bad taste' of the great palace). The only thing to do with it is to conceal, as far as possible, the fact that it is the Albert Hall at all; and this had been pretty successfully done by hiding the organ behind hangings and covering everything in ivory white, and golden fleur-de-lys., and great banners of silk, with Louis's favourite orange-trees in tubs disposed here and there. The effect of the whole was to make a telling background for costumes of enthralling variety and richness......Dancing began about 10 o'clock, the music being played by Mr Corelli Windeatt's Orchestra; and while the Programme included two sets of lancers, which proved to be among the best features of the evening, there was not a single "one-step" in the list, and only seven "two-steps" against 15 waltzes.... At midnight the King was to enter in state. But before the mimic Monarch and his court appeared, a real Queen , Queen Mary of England, arrived in person The Queen, who was wearing turquoise blue with pearls and diamonds, was received at the entrance by Princess Christian, Major General Lord Cheylesmore, Admiral Sir Albert Markham, Lieutenent-General G H Moncrieff, Lieutenent-General Sir Henry Settle, Colonel A G Lucas, and other members of the Committee."
