BiographyRolf Wilson has been recognised as one of the top violinists in Britain over the past 30 years. He won an open Violin Scholarship to study with Frederick Grinky at the Royal Academy of Music. He was appointed sub-leader of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 24, and went on to become Leader of the BBC Welsh and English National Orchestras. For 12 years, he appeared as Leader and Director and Soloist with Capital Radio’s Wren Orchestra, and since 1989, he has been the Leader of the RPO Concert Orchestra.

In addition to performing as a soloist with many of the major orchestras, Rolf is much in demand in the field of film and television music, and he features as violin soloist on many film soundtracks recorded in this country over the past 20 years, most recently on Lord of the Rings.

He has been Leader of the orchestra of the London Production of Phantom of the Opera since 1994, and in 2004 was offered the post of Leader of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

As director of the Locrian Ensemble, he performs all over the UK, and has an impressive list of recordings to his name with this group. Edward Greenfield of the Guardian wrote that their recording of the Schubert Quintet was the best 20th century recording of the piece.
