Suzanne Murphy was born in Limerick, Ireland and studied with Dr. Veronica Dunne at the College of Music in Dublin. Following her studies she joined Welsh National Opera in 1976 as principal soprano making her debut as Konstanze in Mozart’s Il Seraglio, music from which opera she was featured singing in the Academy Award winning film Amadeus. Her work at Welsh National Opera covers an enormous range of operatic roles, ranging from Adina in L’Elisir d’amore to Madame Lidoine in Carmelites and the title roles in Tosca, Norma, Lucia di Lammermoor, Fanciulla del West, and Fidelio. She has also sung major roles with English National Opera, Opera North and Scottish Opera. Suzanne’s numerous performances abroad include amongst others Electra in Idomeneo at the Vienna Staatsoper, Rezia in Oberon for Opera de Lyon and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni at the Aix en Provence Festival. American engagements include Norma, Amelia in Ballo in Maschera Elvira in I Puritani) Lucia, Tosca, Turandot, Ophelia in Hamlet. Alongside her active national and international concert and recital career, Suzanne has made many recordings including Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with E.C.O Tilson Thomas conducting (CBS), and solo recordings of Verdi and Puccini arias. She has received Honorary Degrees from Universities of Glamorgan, and Limerick and has been made an Honorary Fellow of the University of Cardiff and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where she has taught since 2001.
